Lake Anna sparkled for the Fourth of July.  However, we like to get a head start so had them the evening before, on Saturday, July 3rd.  Folks planning on viewing them headed towards Dike #2 by boat and make sure they were there before 9:00.  The fun began shortly after. You had to be sure to allow plenty of time to get there as there were plenty of folks out on the water seeking a great spot to watch the fireworks.  There is absolutely nothing like being on the lake and seeing the fireworks up in that great, big, dark, dark sky.  The lights from all of the boats and the home...

Yesterday I got another glimpse of the "skyscraper" currently under construction on the shores of Lake Anna. Even though it was cloudy, when I saw the progress it was proof that that there's always a ray of sunshine. [caption id="attachment_113" align="aligncenter" width="1024" caption="CHANGES ARE COMING TO LAKE ANNA, VIRGINIA"][/caption] We have a country lifestyle here and this will be a bit of a change for us. This is the beginning of a more commercial look to Lake Anna. It's been a long time coming. The lake is a man-made lake and was created in 1972. There has been talk for year...

Attention:  Mr. Michael Brown, Principal

Playground Improvement Project

Berkeley is a small school that serves about 330 children who live in the very rural parts of Spotsylvania County.  The children at Berkeley are bright, energetic and very eager to learn!

But there is a problem at Berkeley — there is no playground equipment for the 3rd ,4th and 5th grade students to use during their daily recess period!  The school and the PTA want to fix this problem and give their children enough playground equipment so that all the kids may play.  Studies show that children who are given a daily recess where they can be physically active are much healthier, can deal with stress and anxiety better, and can more easily focus on their academic studies.

Berkeley’s PTA goal is to raise $30,000 to help with the purchase and installation of the much-needed playground equipment and they are asking the Spotsylvania community to help the school raise some of that money.  Because the school is small and almost 50% of the school’s families are economically disadvantaged, the school and the PTA continually have problems raising enough money through their fundraisers to buy the equipment.

Although these are tough economic times, we hope you will help us in reaching the PTA’s goal.  A simple donation that is tax deductible can be made with a check payable to Berkeley Elementary School.  We will be grateful for any donation amount.  To help you understand our Playground Improvement Project, we have attached our Playground Improvement Plan and some thoughts on why your financial help will benefit the school and, in turn, will benefit your organization in the community.

Mr. Michael Brown is the principal.  You may contact Mr. Brown at (540) 582-5141 or e-mail him at kmbrown@es.spotsylvania.k12.va.us.

Helping the children of Berkeley Elementary is good for the kids and good for the community.
